Het project GRADIENTS onderzoekt wat het betekende om Europeaan te zijn in koloniaal Afrika, waar identificatie als Europeaan vaak niet afhing van huidskleur en werd gezien als een spectrum met vele gradiënten.

Dit project combineert een uitgebreide nieuwe open database over taalkundige distributies, ruimtelijke modellering en areale taalkunde om de rollen van sociale en omgevingsfactoren bij het ontstaan van taalkundige diversiteitspatronen in Zuid-Amerika te ontrafelen.
